UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES REQUIRE STRATEGY

Today, job searching can be a daunting task. It’s even more complicated for job seekers living with chronic pain, chronic illness, disabilities or caregivers.  These life circumstances require a more strategic approach to the job search. “Take any job” and “apply everywhere” like shooting darts is the typical job search strategy. But job seekers today, especially those managing health issues or caregiving responsibilities, need to think about more than the salary.

They need to think about what hours they can work and also still see their providers, who generally only work normal business hours. In today’s return to office (RTO) trend, such mandates may seem like remote work is the only option. Hybrid work, consisting of at least 1 day in the office offers more flexibility.   However, even at workplaces that require employees to be in the office, remote work is a reasonable accommodation.  Job seekers may need intermittent leave available under the FMLA to take care of themselves or immediate family members. The key to a strategic job search lies in considering your abilities, needs and the laws.

STRATEGIC APPROACH TO JOB SEARCHING

Strategic job searching consists of multiple components. First, think about your schedule needs, your capabilities and skills you have or can obtain through upskilling. Then, consider different ways to work. Craft a compelling resume and online presence that reflect your personal brand. Networking remains a crucial element.  Engage with industry professionals and attend relevant events both online and offline. Lastly, leverage online job platforms such as LinkedIn to filter opportunities effectively. Tailor your application to match the job description and emphasize how your specific skill set will add value to the prospective employer. By being intentional in your search, you can work and manage your health and caregiving responsibilities.
