Well being in the workplace has become a hot topic and trend since the pandemic. When people hear the terms workplace wellbeing or workplace wellness, they typically associate it with yoga, mindfulness or meditation. While essential to overall wellness, wellbeing  at work involves a person’s mental state and physical state environment. Merriam-Webster defines well-being as the state of being healthy, happy or prosperous. According to Merriam-Webster, wellness is the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal. Below we will examine the distinction and relationship between workplace well-being and wellness and how to enhance both.

WORKPLACE Well-being

A happy and healthy employee is an engaged employee. Employees tend to be happier at work if they feel heard, supported and have opportunities for advancement. Well-being at work goes beyond physical health. It encompasses social, financial and purpose or fulfillment.  https://yoursapp.com/business/blog/wellness-vs-wellbeing/. These are essential factors in not just individual well-being but also in driving the productivity and success of an organization. The 2024 Well-being at Work Fostering a Healthy Work Climate For All issued by the Human Capital Development Lab at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School listed the following as key dimensions that contribute to employee well-being:

  • mental and emotional support
  • sense of purpose
  • personal support
  • financial health and
  • meaningful connections.

WORKPLACE WELLNESS

Employers and employees alike benefit when there is a culture that promotes health and wellness. Simple strategies can be employed to cultivate this environment, such as implementing ergonomic workspaces that reduce strain and prevent injury.  If an employee feels stressed or anxious, they may find it helpful to take a break and engage in deep breathing such as the 4-7-8 technique or box breathing.  An employee who has difficulty regulating their temperature due to POTS may need to use a fan. Companies can encourage employees to take regular breaks to foster mental clarity and creativity, and consider opportunities for remote work to help balance work-life pressures. A recent study showed that flexible and remote work schedules lead to higher engagement and improved well-being at work. By cultivating a supportive atmosphere where employees feel safe to discuss their wellness needs, including mental health challenges, without stigma, employees are likely to remain engaged.  Fitness programs and stress management workshops can further enhance a positive workplace culture, leading to happier, healthier, and more engaged employees. When wellness is prioritized, absenteeism decreases and productivity soars, ensuring a thriving work environment for all.
